Hey all! So, I finally got to watch “Fifty Shades of Grey” in the comfort of my own home. Yes, I’m done paying $20 to go to the movies. I actually lucked out and found a perfect quality version of the movie online!
Before I give my in-depth opinion of this film, let me just say that the books will ALWAYS be better. Books are always better than their movie version because books are more detailed. The only movie that I thought was just as great as the book was “Gone Girl”. Otherwise, the book always trumps the movie.
As far as casting, I think almost every character was casted well. I didn’t think Dakota Johnson was going to fit the role as great as she did. I’m glad I was wrong. Jamie Dornan was great! I think Rita Ora’s portrayal of Grey’s sister, Mia, was a bit off though. Something about it didn’t sit right with me. But overall, casting was pretty good.
The plot followed the book as best as it can in 2 hours. However, I was left wanting more when the movie finished – not in an “excited for part 2” of way, but in a “what the hell?” kind of way. I feel like some important details were left out. I understand you may not want the movie to be dreadfully long but sometimes you need an extra 30 minutes. “Gone Girl” was a long movie but I didn’t mind it, for the sake of the plot. The movie isn’t as graphic as I thought it would be. There is nudity during the sex scenes but you won’t see any penis. Also, the BDSM aspect of the plot was definitely less intense than in the book, but that’s expected.
Overall, I feel like the movie is a B+ in comparison to the book. The first book wasn’t my favorite though. So perhaps that’s why I don’t give the movie an A. The second book was my absolute favorite of the series. Therefore, I have high hopes for the second movie. Would I recommend this movie to anyone? If you’ve read the books, sure. You should feed your curiosity and compare and contrast for yourself. If you haven’t read the books, then no. It’s not the same unless you’ve read them.
