20 Years Later: Remembering Selena

Hello loves. Today will be more of a somber day for this blog because today marks 20 years that one of my idols, Selena,  passed away. It definitely doesn’t feel like 20 years have passed! I feel like it was just yesterday when I was sitting in between my grandma’s legs watching the news unfold. It was on the news show Primer Impacto and my grandma was doing my hair.  I was only 2 but I remember that day vividly due to the fact that my grandma was hysterical. Selena’s music was constantly playing in my home. Naturally, I grew an attachment to her from watching and listening to her constantly. I was literally obsessed – anyone in my family will tell ya. I would perform her songs in my living room with a hairbrush as my microphone in front of numerous family members hahaha. After her death, she was literally everywhere! She impacted the Latin community so much so that her death was a huge heartache on another level. The movie, Selena, is even the 10th highest grossing biopic of all time! So here I am at 3 am dedicating this post to her, while listening to her last concert on Vimeo…

It’s been 20 years and I’m pretty sure I won’t be the only one remembering her today. Channel 6 (Univision on iO cable) has been talking about her all week. Even the daytime show, The Real, dedicated part of their segment to her yesterday. Selena’s sister, Suzette, appeared on the show and Adrienne Bailon performed “I Could Fall In Love” as a tribute. So, I know she’s definitely in a lot of people’s minds and hearts, especially today and especially in the Latin community.

I don’t want to focus much on her death in this post but if you want to get more info about her life or even just watch some videos or documentaries of her, check out YouTube or even watch the movie. There is tons of info about her legacy online, I also suggest you read the book dedicated to her by her husband, Chris Perez. I’ve discussed the book here.

Review: Aaliyah Movie

(via straightfromthea.com)

Now for those of you who follow me on Twitter, you know that this review is going to be harsh. So let’s just jump right in.

Frankly, Lifetime’s biopic of Aaliyah was pure SH*T. It honestly saddens me to say that because an artist like her deserves so much more than a half-assed TV movie. This “movie” did her NO justice. So let’s begin with casting…

Whoever did the casting for this is on some heavy drugs. Visually, I can SLIGHTLY see why they would pick Alexandra Shipp. If we’re talking vocals, they should’ve stuck with Zendaya – but then again it was her choice to drop out. Zendaya even took the liberty of throwing some shade while the movie aired. She tweeted “KARMA” while the movie playing – shots fired! Yet, I don’t think she would’ve made much of a difference in the movie’s quality anyway. Moving on to the rest of the casting.. point blank it was as if a blind person was in charge of casting. I only recognized 2 other actors who have played roles in the TV show Degrassi.

Besides casting, this movie was just stupid. I didn’t feel emotional and sure I may not be the most emotional person in a room but still. A movie based on an artist that you LOVE should make you feel something. I’m just offended at how bad this movie is. The executive producer, Wendy Williams, should be ashamed for even helping put this out. She stated, “Lifetime needed to tell this story correctly”. Well hate to break it to you, but you didn’t help much. The movie is still crap. The main reason why this movie was so God awful is because her family wasn’t apart of it. So why make a movie when her own family isn’t having it? MAJOR FAIL. Karma? BITCH YOU GUESSED IT!

I sincerely hope that one day her family decides to do an actual biopic based on her life on the BIG SCREEN. That is what she deserves! She deserves something just as amazing as the Selena movie. That movie hands down is the best biopic of all time. Why? Because her family was involved and everything was on point! Lifetime needs to stop making these crappy biopics. Just stick to crime based and life lesson movies, please! I can’t even imagine how bad the Whitney Houston biopic will be. Sorry Aaliyah for this pitiful movie! xx

Rest In Peace Robin Williams

I rarely ever do this unless the person who has passed was a huge deal TO ME. I have to say Robin Williams was, in fact, such a person. I grew up watching Robin Williams. I was always watching his movies -whether it was Aladdin, Mrs.Doubtfire, Jumanji, Patch Adams, Jack, etc. It greatly saddens me and I’m still stunned that this has happened. Ironically, I found out while I was watching Mrs. Doubtfire. Just last week I was watching Jumanji.  Allegedly he died of a suicide but I’m NOT confirming that because this news is so fresh.

Either way I’d like to dedicate this post to him. He was amazing actor and he did his craft extraordinarily well. He will be missed.

Here are some photos from my favorite Robin Williams movies…
